Infrastructure & Connectivity in Meghalaya

As one of the key states in North-Eastern India, Meghalaya has been steadily strengthening its infrastructure to improve connectivity, promote economic growth, and support tourism and industrial development. The State Government has been investing in roads, airports, digital networks, and power sector reforms to ensure balanced and sustainable development.

Transportation Network

Road Transport

Roads are the primary transit mode due to the state's hilly terrain. The state is well connected via National Highways (NH-6, NH-106, NH-127B, and NH-217) linking major towns like Shillong, Tura, Jowai, Nongstoin, and Baghmara with Assam and neighbouring states. Upgradations are managed by the PWD and NHIDCL.

Air Connectivity

Umroi Airport (Shillong Airport) provides regular air connectivity to major cities such as Kolkata and regional destinations. Baljek Airport in West Garo Hills is under development to strengthen regional connectivity, while Guwahati Airport serves as a major domestic and international gateway.

Rail & Inland Waterways

Mendipathar Railway Station in North Garo Hills is the state's first and only railway terminal connecting Meghalaya to the national rail network. Inland waterways are utilized locally along rivers and reservoirs for regional transit and tourism.

Utilities & Telecommunications

Power & Energy Sector

Meghalaya is one of the power-surplus states in the Northeast owing to its rich hydropower potential. The power sector is managed by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), with a growing focus on clean energy like small hydro, solar power, and clean energy initiatives.

Digital & Telecom Infrastructure

Mobile and broadband services have improved significantly, with 4G widely active and 5G deployment expanding. The BharatNet program is actively laying fibre-optic cables in rural areas to support digital governance, education, healthcare, and financial inclusion.

Cross-Border Trade Logistics

Meghalaya's strategic proximity to Bangladesh offers massive cross-border trade and investment opportunities. Integrated transport networks and transit corridors are being optimized under India's Act East Policy.
