Industries in Meghalaya

The industrial sector in Meghalaya is gradually emerging as an important driver of economic growth, supported by the State's rich natural resources, strategic location, skilled workforce and favourable policy environment. The State's proximity to Bangladesh also provides significant opportunities for cross-border trade and investment under India's Act East Policy.

Industrial Landscape & Growth

Mineral & Natural Resources

Meghalaya enjoys abundant deposits of limestone, coal, granite and other minerals. These rich natural resources have facilitated the development and growth of major industries including cement manufacturing, mining, food processing, and tourism.

Industrial Infrastructure & Estates

The Government promotes industrialization via the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and the Directorate of Commerce & Industries. Active industrial estates and growth centres are established at locations such as Byrnihat, Umiam, Mendipathar, Tura and Williamnagar to cater to manufacturing and service enterprises.

Key Thrust Industries

Thrust areas include cement, food processing, beverages, bamboo & cane products, handloom & handicrafts, horticulture-based processing, tourism, hospitality, and IT-enabled services, with a strong focus on adding value to agriculture and horticulture.

Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)

The Economic Backbone

As the backbone of the state's industrial economy, MSMEs foster entrepreneurship and inclusive economic development. Thousands of micro and small enterprises operate across sectors such as food processing, handicrafts, weaving, bamboo products, carpentry, furniture, tourism, tailoring and service industries.

Institutional Support & Credit Flow

Policy support, financial assistance, skill development and marketing support are facilitated by District Commerce & Industries Centres (DCICs), MSME Development Institute, KVIC, North Eastern Development Finance Corporation (NEDFi), and commercial banks to promote entrepreneurship.

Overcoming Challenges

To address constraints like high transportation costs, limited access to finance, inadequate industrial infrastructure, and market connectivity, the Government is promoting digitalization, cluster development, capacity building, and easier access to institutional finance.

Entrepreneurship & Livelihood Schemes

Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)

PMEGP is a flagship credit-linked subsidy scheme that provides financial assistance for establishing new manufacturing and service enterprises in both rural and urban areas of Meghalaya, implemented through KVIC, MKVIB, DCICs and scheduled commercial banks.

Khadi & Village Industries (KVI)

Coordinated by MKVIB and KVIC, this sector preserves traditional crafts like weaving, bamboo/cane products, handloom, honey production, food processing, and pottery, generating sustainable rural livelihoods and promoting women's empowerment.

Startup & PRIME Initiatives

The Government actively fosters a vibrant start-up ecosystem through the Meghalaya Startup Policy and PRIME (Promotion and Incubation of Market-driven Enterprises) via incubation support, mentoring, capacity building, and start-up funding.
