As the gateway to north-eastern India, Assam is continuously developing the infrastructure needs by creating new roads, inland waterways, and other modes of transportation for efficient connectivity throughout this vast region.

The major modes of transportation in Assam are roadways, railways, airways and inland waterways.

Road transport

The road network in Assam comprised of total 59,261.18 km of roads consisting of 3,882.88km of National Highways, 2,540.36 km of State Highways, 4,309.93 km of Major District Roads, 1,738.50 km of Urban roads, 46,789.50 km of Rural Roads as on March,2022. Public transport is the common mode of transport linking towns and villages of Assam. Assam accounts for approximately 60% of the total road length in the North-east. The major towns in the state are connected by National Highways.

Railway transport

With a total rail route length of 2435.13 kms, Assam has a convenient railway network connecting the state to the rest of the country. Within the State, broad gauge rail network connects all the major towns. Besides, all major district towns of the state are interlinked by railways whose headquarters of North-East Frontier Railways is located in Guwahati which is the most connected city of the north-eastern region.

Airport

The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati is 18 km from the city centre and is well connected to New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai.

All major airlines operate regular flights to and from Guwahati. There are also regular intra-state air services connecting the six civil airports (Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Silchar & North Lakhimpur) of the state. Some of the tea gardens have their own airstrips and aircrafts.

Inland Water Transport

The river Brahmaputra has been declared as the 2nd National Waterway of the country. Two Government-owned organisations (Central Inland Waterways Corporation and Directorate of Inland Waterways, Assam) operate water transport services on the river Brahmaputra and Barak on a commercial basis. Assam's internal waterway network connects it to Bangladesh, giving it access to the ports of Chittagong, Kolkata and Haldia.

Power

The state is well on its way to achieve self-sufficiency in power. The entire power industry of the State is managed by 1. The Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL), 2. The Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL), 3. The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).

Government has taken initiatives for promoting renewable energy sources like Solar and Wind energy to complement the existing sources of power for lighting there mote villages, hill areas and char areas and also to cater the irrigation needs of the Agriculture Sector.

Telecommunication and Internet Connectivity

The households and companies face no hurdles in accessing telecom facilities which have been at the core of industrial enterprise. A range of broadband services and wireless connectivity are being offered in Assam. The cell phone users have ready access to 4G, 5G and other latest wave of digital innovations. The wireless telephone and devices has been taken over the ubiquitous landline phones. As on March 2021, there were 2,47,18,731 numbers of wireless telephone subscribers in the state.
